FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 19, 2014) – More than 130 local kids participated in this year’s Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County’s Third Annual AAA Bowl, a friendly competition among Club members who showcase their talents in the ‘Arts, Academics and Athletics.’

During the AAA Bowl, participants competed in a code competition, prepared public speaking event, and spelling masters contest, the knowledge of states and capitals, and Florida history, a game of basketball, checkers, chess, and Connect Four, and in art, track, hula hooping and more.

“The AAA Bowl is an opportunity for our Club members to take everything they learned in our Clubs and apply it in a competitive spirit,” said Shannon Lane, chief professional officer of the BGCLC. “It’s also a great way for the kids themselves to realize their personal growth, as they display skills in teamwork, preparation and focus.”

Members from each of the BGCLC’s five locations, including Lehigh, Pueblo Bonito, Renaissance, Shady Oaks and Suncoast, participated in spring tryouts to be selected to join their individual Club’s AAA Bowl team. Chosen members then had to attend their Clubs to practice with their teams. This event provided an incentive for members to attend their Club often.

The AAA Bowl Championship was awarded to the Renaissance Club, and the AAA Bowl Citizenship Award went to the Suncoast Club.

Celebrating 40 years of providing quality youth programs and brighter futures for young people in our community, the Boys & Girls Clubs works to inspire and enable young people to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens. The BGCLC strives to provide a safe, world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through its doors. The organization envisions all of its members graduating high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship and living a healthy lifestyle.

Clubs are located in communities with the greatest need where similar services are limited or nonexistent. Membership dues are $10 per school year so that all children can have access to its programs. The BGCLC relies upon the philanthropic support of individuals, corporations and foundations in order to sustain and grow its services.
