FORT MYERS, Fla. (June 3, 2014) – The Southwest Florida Community Foundation recently granted 84 scholarships to local high-school students and undergraduate and graduate students from Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Glades and Hendry counties.
For the 2014 scholarship season, 950 eligible applications were received from high-school and college students in the five-county area the Community Foundation serves.
According to Anne Douglas, director of programs for the foundation, a total of $321,200 was awarded in competitive scholarships and another $190,310 awarded in designated and outside committee scholarships, for a grand total of $511,510. This total is more than a $60,000 increase from last year’s awarded funds.
Community Foundation scholarships were awarded to high-school seniors who will continue their education at the university, community college or vocational/technical school level, as well as to undergraduate and graduate students continuing a post-secondary education.
For the fourth consecutive year, students interested in applying for a SWFLCF scholarship were able to access an application online. The E-Apply online scholarship application tool was available through the Community Foundation’s website at www.floridacommunity.com/scholarships. Even before the application process opened in December 2013, students were given the opportunity to review the varied scholarships and their guidelines available online as well as watch a tutorial about how to create and submit the online application.
Students were permitted to apply for multiple scholarships and had the option to upload transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, letters of recommendation and financial documentation (if required) along with their online application. The deadline for applications was March 1, 2014.
Founded in 1976, the Southwest Florida Community Foundation supports the communities of Lee, Charlotte, Collier, Glades and Hendry counties and also acts as the regional convener and leader with firsthand knowledge of community needs.
